Your midwife will help determine your gestational age during your first prenatal appointment. Your first prenatal appointment will include gathering a complete medical and family history and conducting pelvic and breast exams, urine tests, a pap smear and blood work. What will happen at my first prenatal appointment? Your first prenatal appointment is a thorough health assessment of both you and the baby, and as such it requires more time than an average visit. We ask all patients to plan for the appointment to take a total of 60 to 90 minutes. How long does the first prenatal appointment take? We recommend calling our office immediately following your positive result to schedule your first prenatal appointment, which typically takes place eight to ten weeks following your last menstrual period. When should I see my doctor after a positive pregnancy test? A pregnancy confirmation appointment is not often necessary, as home pregnancy tests are highly accurate and can be confirmed through a second at-home test. Please Note: Your first prenatal appointment will be a thorough health assessment and is different from a pregnancy confirmation appointment, during which a midwife or doctor confirms your pregnancy using a blood draw. If you are a new patient, welcome! The first prenatal appointment can be an excellent introduction to our practice.

If you are already a patient of the nurse-midwives at Swedish Hospital, this will not be the first time you visit our office. You can call to schedule this appointment as soon as you receive a positive result from your home pregnancy test.
